About Us

Formed in September 2012 by Melonie Roberts, the Stonefields Choir has grown to a 85 strong group of singers.

The aim of the choir is to have fun, sing our hearts out, maybe learn some new skills or rekindle some old ones and of course do the occasional performance. Our most recent concert was in October 2017 we performed music from around the world to a packed auditorium at St Matthews in the City.

Our choir membership is incredibly diverse being made up of people from 16 to 80 and from all walks of life and nationalities. Some of us read Music others do not, some of us have been in choirs before in NZ or further afield and again many are new to choral singing.

We are not a religious choir but this does not stop us singing celebratory hymns or songs if we feel they will add to our repertoire. We sing music from all genres including Musical Theatre, Pop, Jazz and Gospel.

We meet to practice at Stonefields School Hall on Mondays during school terms at 7.15pm until 9 pm with a short refreshment break in the middle of the session. Fees are $90 per term for membership of our main choir.  This is followed by our extension Group rehearsal (SFX) which will run from 9.00pm to 9.30pm. An additional charge of $30 is payable per term to join SFX and additional responsibilities exist (see here). We run the choir under the business name The Choir Ltd, along with other choirs.

So why not come and join us, contact Mel on 021 677 778 for more information or click on the Join her tab above

What sort of music do we sing?

We sing a range of different musical styles typically in 4 part harmony, the tracks below are from our concert in December 2014.

And see below a couple of songs from our sold out performance at St Matthews in the City in October 2016

Melonie Roberts - Founder

Mum of 2 ( Krysten 11 and James 7) and married to Paul (92) who is also a member of the Choir, Mel is the one whose idea it was to form a choir. Born in Bedford in the UK she lived in London for several years and then Coventry before she emigrated to NZ in 2009.

“ I decided to form a choir as I had been a member of a community choir in the UK before we made the move to NZ.  I knewfirst hand how great it can be to get people together to sing. It can create a great community environment, help people gain in confidence and can be fantastic fun.”

Kate Bell - Musical Director

Kate directs our mixed-voice all-comers choir.  She believes that everyone can sing and that singing is a skill, like any other, which can be improved through instruction, practice and encouragement.  Kate is a professional choir director, arranger, composer and singing teacher.  She has a Masters in Music from Auckland University, majoring in composition and choral direction, and sings with the University of Auckland Chamber Choir.   As well as Stonefields, Kate is musical director for a number of other choirs.  She also runs the Choir for a Day workshops from time to time.
